IVORY KEYS

“Please tell me you learned it already?!” I overheard my friends talking about the new song we had learned at youth camp. And I nonchalantly commented, “If you’re talking about ‘Let us Search’, I actually have the music sheet!!” I saw my friend’s eyes light up as she asked, “You do?! Can you please play the piano after Bible Quiz rounds?” I just said, “Yes, of course!!”

Ever since morning church service, I could feel that God’s presence had lingered in our hearts. And even more so after a certain situation occurred during our Bible Quiz rounds. I was a bit skeptical about having enough time to sing the new song with my friend because we had to record our lines for our Children’s Puppet Show we’ll be doing this year. And we were behind on schedule already. But we serve a wonderful God who is so aware of how we feel. He is aware of the cries we carry in our hearts even when it seems as if no one around us is aware of the troubles we are having. God allowed our time for the puppet show to be pushed back in order to give us a few minutes to worship. It was as if He was giving us a breather. In that moment, we got a message from our youth leaders—we’d be starting the recordings within half an hour.

I’m not lying when I say this, for 30 minutes straight, we sang the new song. I honestly did not feel the time fly. I could only feel God’s presence hugging us as I played those ivory keys while my friends sang. Every time we would transition to the second verse, I could feel that each one of us singing, was praising God despite our burdens by saying “great is thy faithfulness”.

Let us search and try our ways, and turn again unto the Lord.
Let us lift up our heart unto God.
Let us lift up our hands unto God in the heavens

And turn again to the Lord our God.
It is of the Lord’s mercies that we have not been consumed,

Because His compassions fail not.
They are new ev’ry morning,

They are new evr’y morning;

And great is Thy faithfulness.

When our time was up, we turned to look at each other. There was no doubt that God was in our midst. His peace filled our hearts. And there were smiles all around. This song has truly become one of my favorites now. And I’m so grateful that God gave us this moment to experience His presence together. It is crucial we remain sensitive to God’s presence, especially in the trying times we are living at the moment. Nothing else matters on this earth. Only our relationship with God. It is because of His mercies and faithfulness that we have not been consumed.

“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end;

they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.””
