THROW OFF EVERYTHING

Success doesn’t come in moments, but it grows throughout a lifetime of walking with God each and every day.” (Counting the Cost devotional by Second Baptist Houston)

What does it mean to have success? The dictionary defines it as “the accomplishment of an aim or purpose; the attainment of fame, wealth, or social status”. The world around us believes that success can only be found in having that amazing career, owning that luxurious car, gaining millions of followers on the social platforms; but is that really what it means to be successful? The world continues to desire more fame, more wealth, yet their hearts are never satisfied.

As Christians we should “throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us…” Hebrews 12:1b (NIV). To be successful is to let go of whatever hinders us from completely following Gods will. We must be willing to let go of anything that distracts us or pulls us away from what God wants for us.

“he will lose sight of his goal…”

As believers we are running a race. What if while running a marathon, a contestant suddenly stops midway and gets distracted by a random helicopter hovering above or stops to smell the wildflowers growing by the road while everyone else is running past him? He will lose sight of his goal set out before him.

If we are easily getting distracted by what this world has to offer, we lose sight of our ultimate goal…Christ’s life fulfilled in us. Colossians 3:1-4 clearly encourages us to “set our minds on things above, not earthly things…” (NIV).

The more we are filled with God’s presence in our lives, the less we want of this world. We begin to understand that as Christians and as beloved children of God, we are just sojourners on this earth, traveling towards the Promised Land. This world is not our final home! Amy Hornbuckle wrote, “As we grow and mold our hearts and minds in Christ, we lose all reason to desire wordly fulfillment…” The things of this earth will never satisfy us but as we draw closer to God, they will grow “strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace” (Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus by Helen H. Lemmel)
